This week is Proudly South African week (http://www.proudlysa.co.za/). While there are plenty of things not to be proud of, we do have plenty to be very proud of – and I am definitely proudly South African!
- Nelson Mandela
- A South Africa co-invented the CAT scan
- Kreepy-Krauly
- Mark Shuttleworth
- 1st heart transplant performed here
- Biltong
- pioneered the extraction of oil from coal
- produced Nobel Prize winners like Desmond Tutu, F.W. de Klerk, Nadine Gordimer and of course Nelson Mandela
- first country in the world to voluntarily abandon our nuclear weapons capability
- abandoned the sins of our past without bloody revolution
- the South African Large Telescope
- world leaders in certain sectors of science and technology
So buy local – I do :-)
On Friday Google released new data layers for Google Earth which index National Geographic stories, images and journals from the African continent – as if Google Earth wasn’t fascinating enough already.

And I have to add the Rooivalk attack helicopter :-) Definitely one of SA’s finest creations -apart from its purpose. Also the mine protected/clearing vehicles from Reumech that currently serve with almost every peace keeping force in the world.
The fact that we already have more than 10 % of our total surface area set aside for conservation with more to come.
