A home birth was a wonderful experience – Clair and I are now certified water / home-birth evangelists. Our midwife and her assistant were the most amazingly capable and reassuring people, arriving in the early hours of the morning with mountains of equipment, smiles and encouragement. A home birth makes you realise how unnecessarily “medical” and clinical a hospital birth can be – the boys didn’t even leave the house, they slept through the whole thing and woke up to a new baby sister. The actual delivery was over in minutes and the easiest delivery by far (says he who didn’t have to do the pushing :-)
I am in awe of my wonderful wife who is far stronger than I am. Thank you my Clair for our third miracle and first baby daughter.
Enough waffle – Hannah’s first photos are here. I’m off to catch up some sleep.
Obligatory Richard Stallman quote:
“It doesn’t take special talents to reproduce — even plants can do it. On the other hand, contributing to a program like Emacs takes real skill. That is really something to be proud of.
It helps more people, too.”

Congratulation! What a sweet baby.
I am sending the link to a YouTube trailer for my film, “The Other Side of the Glass: Finally, a Birth Film for Fathers.” Please share the link with your colleagues and lists.

I hope this works. If not, on the YouTube.com site search “The Other Side of the Glass’ and it will be about five or six down on the page. Father’s face is there.

Very interesting (I fixed your link). We have known since before our first child was born – from watching BBC documentaries and reading extensively – that infants are aware in many ways before they are born (twins play and establish relationships, left/right hand preference is decided, they react to sight, sound and taste etc – all before birth). I’m a sceptic at times and an armchair scientist so I was initially wary of a home birth where the show is run by a midwife and NOT the traditional medical doctor – but I am sold, convinced and quite upset that we didn’t have the boys in similar circumstances. Hannah didn’t cry – not once – and fed easily and immediately – both mom and baby were happy and connected and calm in a way we never experienced in hospital. When I am up on my soap box I preach strongly for breast feeding, against Caesarean births (especially important in this country), and now for home (and in particular water) births.
Congrats on the new addition to the family brother…
Congratulations :)
