me

gmail-address-image.pngMy name is Ewan McPhail and I am a geek, husband, father dad, christian and cat herder living on the east coast of South Africa.

For business types see my LinkedIn profile, for a more personal touch there is always Facebook.

I am endlessly fascinated by the universe and space exploration, scientific discovery, the process of software design and people who design software. I occasionally suffer from imposter syndrome (and don't think that's a problem), work hard at being humble, and am a hopeful singularitarian (hopeful because at this stage we barely understand the complexity of our own brains and bodies).

I am a christian and a scientist (but not a Christian Scientist) who subscribes to the scientific theory of evolution (and doesn't see this as a contradiction). I also believe homosexuality is biological - nature not nurture - and is not a sin. I count astronomy, internet security and software design among my hobbies, my Myers-Briggs personality type is INTJ, and I have been described as an eternally optimistic thinker. I am a skeptic - not to be confused with a cynic, which I am definitely not. I love to run - especially along the beach early in the morning. I read everything from science fiction (the only truly mind expanding drug) to management guides (and Slashdot, for the comments) - life is too short to live only once.

I am a springbok scout, and thanks to the scouting movement discovered my leadership talent and style when I was 16. I maintain an attitude of gratitude and try to cultivate a sense of childlike wonder - I think this is a wonderful time to be alive.

If you judge me by what you find on this site, you are insane - but you're probably going to anyway, so you may as well include my delicious bookmarks for current (and past) things which interest me (going by those currently I am a geek, software manager with an interest in software, google, science, religion, South Africa, open source, visualization, business, astronomy and digital securiy. Not far off the truth).

My home town is Durban, South Africa (Panoramio, Wikipedia, Flickr):
