scifi.com has announced that Battlestar Galactica is up for a second season. Flipping fantastic :-) I absolutely loved the 1st season, all 13 episodes rocked. Coming from a serious trekkie this is a huge statement, but BGS is the best Scifi series I have *ever* seen. Even better than Atlantis. Borrowing from some of the slashdot comments, it's dark, gritty, believable and more about people, psychology and sociology than amazing science. Characters (and they are all fascinating and wildly different) don't rely technology to solve all their problems, it often comes down to human determination and desperation. Maybe too much sex, but then i'm a prude sometimes :-)
I love the religious angle, and can't wait to see where that goes. Bad guys who have a belief more like my personal beliefs than the good guys polytheism is fascinating.
Camera work is clever and like nothing i've ever seen before - like plenty of others it seems, i love the whole "zooming in" effect which gives you a feeling for the distances and relative sizes involved in space.
I don't think it bastardises the original series at all (not that i remember much of it, apart from some special effects).
Ron Moore - creative and executive producer - maintains his BSG blog which is excellent, and includes a fascinating Q&A session (check the archives for Jan 2005). Dialog with fans is great (just look at Babylon-5).
