"Brigadier General Paul Tibbets Jr., the commander and pilot of the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in the final days of World War II, died Thursday at his home in Columbus, Ohio. He was 92."

Awhile back - after the New York Times opened it's archives to the public - I found the original news report about the dropping of "little boy" on Hiroshima. Not a proud moment for mankind.

"The announcement, first given to the world in utmost solemnity by President Truman, made it plain that one of the scientific landmarks of the century had been passed, and that the "age of atomic energy," which can be a tremendous force for the advancement of civilization as well as for destruction, was at hand."

I'm currently reading Virtuoso Teams, and one of the featured world-changing teams is the one led by General Leslie Groves - the Manhattan Project, the team that designed and built the first nuclear weapon. If Groves had his way, Kyoto would probably have been bombed instead of Hiroshima.
