One Step Forward, Four Steps Back

half-mast-rainbow-flag.jpgAmericans vote in their first african-american president (a symbol of tolerance and hope for the world) and in the same moment they ban gay marriage in three states, and even ban same-sex couples from adopting children in Arkansas! One step forward, and four backwards.

The same-sex marriage debate has been going on for some time, but preventing same sex couples from adopting children is a new low – the saddest, most ignorant and intolerant outcome I have ever seen. This from the same state whose state fruit and vegetable are the tomato, home of Bill Clinton and model of racial integration.

These so-called “religious conservatives” are giving Christianity, humanity and religion in general a bad name – time for a refresher course on the top 10 reasons why gay marriage is wrong.

“There is enough of the population that is alarmed at the general breakdown of the family, that has been so inundated with images of homosexual relationships in all of the media,” said Mr. Hunter, who gave the benediction at the Democratic National Convention this year, yet supported the same-sex marriage ban in his state. “It’s almost like it’s obligatory these days to have a homosexual couple in every TV show or every movie.”

*sigh*

Christians, Homophobes, IVF and Monsters

facepalm-picard.jpgFirst I discover the sad, sad site that is Conservapedia (sad but still funny in many ways thanks in part to its founder Andrew Schlafly, see my previous post) and then I find their articles on homosexuality. Not funny any more – an advertisement of the worst kind for Christianity, not to mention an example of homophobia, bad science, bias and intolerance. Jon Swift says it better than I ever could.

Then I come across a blog entry by one Zsuzsanna in Tempe, Arizona which blows me away – another example of ignorance, malice, religious intolerance and another terrible advertisement for Christianity.

Zsuzsanna attacks local blogger Tertia of So Close fame for using IVF, calling her a monster, inappropriate, vulgar, and a psycho. WTF? In the same breath she extrapolates from this MSNBC (AP quoted) article, thoroughly demonstrating her ignorance of Africa, African people, statistics and Christianity in general.

Tertia’s response (Apparently I am a monster, inappropriate, vulgar and a psycho) is great and happily her blog is showered with mostly sane responses from hundreds of readers, Christians and not. If Zsuzsanna wasn’t already exposed as a grade A nutter, her blogged response makes it very clear.

South African Parliament Approves Same-Sex Marriages

Another proudly South African moment – SA is now the first African and only the 5th nation in the world to legalise same-sex marriages. Not just civil unions, but full marriage as it should be imho.

“This has been a litmus test of our constitutional values. It forced us to consider: What does equality really mean? What does it look like? Equality does not exist on a sliding scale.” – Melanie Judge, the program manager for OUT

As usual, the ACDP has something insightful (1) to add:

“We are out of step with the rest of Africa and with rest of world. The international norm is civil unions, as opposed to same-sex marriages. What happened today conflicts with the views of the majority of South Africans.” – Steve Swart, a legislator with the African Christian Democratic Party

(1) not!

Update It seems I was wrong, the original marriage legislation is still unchanged (heterosexuals only) while this new legislation creates a “civil union” (available to both heterosexual and gay couples) which is equal in the eyes of the law to a traditional marriage, but obviously not the same thing. So it’s a huge step in the right direction, but not true equality just yet.
Update Kevin has a good-read post on the subject (he has more time to post than I do, apparently :-) including a link to the Deo Gloria Family Church website (which as he says is a great source of information especially if you are a Christian and believe – incorrectly – that the bible condemns homosexuality).

A religious recipe for losing the smart people

Jeffrey Nielsen, a part-time instructor at Brigham Young University and a practising Mormon, will lose his job after he questioned the leaders of the Mormon church on their stance against gay marriage (The Salt Lake Tribune : BYU instructor let go for questioning LDS stand on gay marriage).
Leaders of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (wikipedia) want members to support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, something Jeffrey believes is immoral and wrong. He stated his views in an op-ed work he wrote for The Salt Lake Tribune: LDS authority and gay marriage.

A perfect God does not require blind obedience, nor does He need unthinking loyalty. Freedom of conscience is a divine blessing, and our privilege to express it is a moral imperative.

I agree with his viewpoint and think his article is great, and respect Jeffrey for publicly standing his ground over his beliefs. As Jeffrey says, Science is well on its way towards proving that same-sex attraction is biologically based (see news article “Sexual orientation of men determined before birth” – Reuters, 27th June 2006)… and the Mormon church has in the past overlooked it’s own polygamy issues despite what the Bible says about a union between a man and a woman (singular), so surely this is hypocritical?

Truly, God would be unjust if He were the creator of a biological process that produced such uncommon, yet perfectly natural results, and then condemned the innocent person to a life of guilt, while denying him or her the ordinary privileges and fulfillment of the deep longing in all of us for family and a committed, loving relationship.

I am a Christian (but definitely not a Mormon :-) who strongly believes that God deliberately created and loves each and every one of us – straight or gay, sinner or saint – and His kingdom is open to all believers.

South Africa court rules in favour of gay marriage

2005/12/01 : Suddenly I’m extra proudly South African. Our constitutional court (the country’s highest court) has just ruled in favour of same-sex marriages (Wikipedia). This makes us the 5th country in the world to legalise – not just accept – same-sex marriage and all the benefits that provides same-sex couples. Wonderful news :-)

“The common law definition of marriage is declared to be inconsistent with the constitution and invalid to the extent that it does not permit same-sex couples to enjoy the status and benefits it accords heterosexual couples,” said Justice Albie Sachs in a ruling delivered by the constitutional court.

update [2005/12/02]: International media has now picked it up (see Google News and the NYT article which links to the full text of the CC ruling) and Google blog search is showing serious activity too as expected :-)
Opposition quotes:

I warned the ANC that by including the ‘sexual orientation’ clause they were aiming at redefining marriage, the ANC said they would never redefine marriage, therefore they must take the blame for the moral degeneration of the country and break-down of the family” – Kenneth Meshoe, president of the ACDP (from this press release)

Every long-standing society has viewed marriage as a union of male and female. Studies of previous civilizations reveal that when a society strays from the sexual ethic of marriage, it deteriorates and eventually disintegrates,” said Steve Swart, the ACDP’s spokesperson on justice and constitutional matters.
